It’s All About Those Boots

Tis the season for boots! It's time to make sure you're stocked up with some of the hottest boot styles this season, from chelsea to over the knee. Here are just a few of my favorites that you should run to the store to get.

1) Over-the-knee boots – Really a style that started as a trend that's just a staple now. My favorite version is the Stuart Weitzman – Highland boot. This boot is everything to me. It can really turn any outfit into a "wow" outfit. And it comes in a few colors… if grey is too bold for you, go for the classic black version. And if the heel is daunting, there's always the lowland version which, in my opinion, is just as hot.

2) 50/50 Boots – For those who have calf issues with boots, whether too big or too small, 50/50 boots are half leather, half elastic-y material so they can fit calves of varying sizes. Stuart Weitzman also wins my favorite in this style, but there are plenty of more affordable styles, like these INC 50/50 boots from Macy's.

3) Stiletto Ankle bootie – A nice high heeled ankle boot can edge up a look like a girly dress in no time. I'm in love with these Saint Laurent – Paris metallic leather boots. First they're gold, which is amazing, and second that silhouette is just perfect.

4) The everyday boots – I may like the look of high-heels, but I don't like the pain, so I always have a pair of flat or low-heeled boots when lots of walking is required. I just adore a low stacked heel ankle boot. They go perfect with skinny jeans or any mini-skirt. Added bonus with these Circus by Sam Edelman Reese Monk Strap boots is that pointed toe. The more pointed the toe, the better.

Guys’ Guide to Gift Giving: Black Friday Edition

Pssst… guys! It's that time of year again. That time when your lady is expecting a holiday gift she can brag to all her friends about. You want to get that gush-worthy gift for her, but when you ask her what she wants, she'll probably shrug and say she will love whatever you buy her. And although this sounds like a dream come true… it's a trap! Truth is, it's likely she's trying to telepathically communicate her wish list. Rockwell Tharp Comes to The Fashion Mall at Keystone

Fellow Style Mavens!

This past weekend we welcomed the legendary brand "Rockwell Tharp" to The Fashion Mall at Keystone. One of the mall's newest store additions, Day Furs, hosted their grand opening event and to celebrate the occasion, the owners (who happen to also be the designers of this rock-western brand) were on hand to answer questions and meet with guests in-store all weekend.

Worn proudly by many celebrities around the world, Rockwell Tharp has quickly gained a cult following, especially from rock and western artists. The designer's huge range and customization availability has helped make these special boots so popular.

You can see below a few of the styles that were on display at Day Furs. One of my favorites the blonde cheetah cowboy boot.

In addition to boots, they also make hand woven and beaded bags such as the one shown below on the left. The classic leather bag below on the right shows a more conservative side to the brand.

As you can see, there is nothing ordinary about anything from Rockwell Tharp. If you're wanting to stand out in the crowd or make a personal fashion statement, then this brand is definitely for you.

Recently I had the pleasure of shooting a pin-up style photo session at Flaunt Boudoir and I must say that it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. From the moment I entered the studio I immediately felt like a Hollywood starlet getting ready for her close-up. I was so excited and could not wait to get my glam on. But before the glamourocity got underway, I was treated to a fabulous makeup and styling session courtesy of Flaunt’s resident Makeup Artist, Michele Franco. A few complimentary mimosas later, and after getting all dolled-up and diva-fied by Michele, it was time to strike a pose. And, Kris did an uh-mazing job! She had me channeling my inner vixen, and let me tell ya that I was in rare form. In fact, I was so in-to character that Marilyn Monroe would blush with envy. It was sooo much fun!!!

Imagine you’re in town for a few days on business. You’re in meetings all day followed by even more business chatter at dinner. When it’s time to head home you realize that you haven’t shopped for that special gift for yourself, or your loved ones back home. Well, if you’ve ever been to a city like Atlanta, you know just how daunting an effort that can be. Besides the notion of having to navigate your way around the big city, there’s always that underlying fact that there is simply no time to go shopping. Of course, you could stop by the lobby gift shop, but there’s nothing there that you can’t find anywhere else. Besides, gift shops are so yesterday.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could shop for unique finds from the comfort of the hotel? Not only would this save time, but it would eliminate all of the guess stress work of finding the perfect gift.

Well, that’s exactly what Marriott Hotels and American Express had in mind when they teamed up to create a unique and innovative shopping experience for guests. Offering travelers with genuine, locally-inspired experiences, Marriott and AMEX have re-imagined the future of travel with their new Travel Brilliantly – Shop Small® Pop Up initiative. Here’s the concept… Promote local businesses and provide a unique shopping experience for travelers and guests where they can explore neighborhood shops without leaving the lobby. What a brilliant idea!

Recently I “popped in” to the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta to preview this new “gifts-to-you” concept and I must say that I was truly impressed. Not only is it literally “out of the box”, but the space felt very intimate and uber chic. Set inside a cool showcase-style mini-boutique, local retailers display a unique collection of exclusive finds that travelers won’t find anywhere else. Showcase shoppers could also gain a little insight on the pop-up shop and the featured retailers courtesy of a touch screen display situated at the shops entrance. Fabulous!

Guffey’s, a custom clothier that offers a distinct selection of dress and casual clothing for men. Eco Denizen, an eco-friendly retailer that features unique handmade products and gifts ideas. blabla Kids, who offers contemporary artisan-crafted hand knit dolls and apparel, as well as toys, rattles and more for kids. TRIO Custom Clothiers, who offers affordable bespoke tailored suits, shirts, and other garments for men. Crafted Westside, a collective of talented artisans and designers offering unique jewelry, apparel, accessories, art/décor, and bath and body products. Tweeds, a men’s shop offering handcrafted men’s clothing and accessories. Uptown Pups, a doggie boutique that offers fun, unique, and affordable pet products. And, Young Blood, a fabulous boutique that features beautiful hand-crafted, jewelry, art, and creatively inspired pieces for the home.

I caught up with Young Blood Boutique’s co-owner Jessie White for a quick Q&A about the boutique, her inspirations for YBB, and their aspirations for the future.

What is Young Blood? How do you describe your business to someone who is entering your store for the first time?

“We stock a curated collection of goods from independent designers and artists from all over the US. We have everything from jewelry and art prints to apothecary and home goods. And, we’re always adding new lines to the shop to keep it fresh.”

What do you love most about your business?

“There’s so much! It’s pretty great to hang around jewelry all day…but a lot is due to our artists and our customers. The designers and artists we work with are not only talented but they’re all really kind, solid people. It’s rewarding to be able to work with them so that we can all continue doing what we love each day. And, our customers are the best. Many of them have been coming to Young Blood for years and we’ve had the opportunity to watch them get married, meet their children, or hear about their business ventures or travels. It’s fun to be able to see the ways in which the things they find in the shop fit into their lives.”

What made you decide to get involved in the pop-up shop, and how has it been so far?

“It’s been great and we’re honored to have been invited to participate. The pop-up is a unique way to reach out to travelers who may not otherwise get a chance to venture too far out into the city. It’s always been one of our goals to turn new people on to the benefits of buying independently made goods. We’re excited some folks in other cities are getting Holiday gifts from Atlanta this year!”

What’s on the horizon for Young Blood?

“We’re fortunate that our customers and our community have been very supportive and the shop is growing a lot. There are a couple different directions we could go next year and we’re currently trying to figure out which one feels right. One thing we know for sure, we want to bring even more new art and design to the city. There is so much exciting stuff out there!”

Marriott’s pop-up shop is much more than a concept… it’s an amenity rooted in convenience. Afterall, shopping on-the-go should be fun, stress free, and most importantly accommodating. Now that’s brilliant idea!

Bishops Coffee and Tea is brewing a latte’ of excitement in Atlanta

Let’s be honest… People take their coffee VERY seriously. Don’t believe me? Try asking your coworker how their day is going, while knowing that they hadn’t had their morning Joe to kick start the day.

No rush… I’ll wait.

And while questioning like this typically warrant a “snarl” followed by a reply of “NOT good!!!”, it’s safe to say that a great cup of coffee or tea can set the tone for a much happier day.

Now, I don’t consider myself a “coffee connoisseur” or a “devo-tea” by any means, but, I can appreciate a great brew. Now who wouldn’t want to be a sibling in that situation?! 🙂 What started as a dream in 2007 quickly became a reality for Bishop whose personality is just as grounded and perky as the brew she prepares. Bishop’s love for coffee began at the ripe age of 13 when she visited Berkeley, California and shared her first cup with her father and grandfather. With lots of encouragement channeled through her passion to make the perfect brew, the rest… as they say… is hot beverage history.

I had the pleasure of attending a private preview at Bishops Coffee and Tea recently and I must say that it was an experience that I (and my tastes buds) will not soon forget. Not only was I treated to one of the finest gourmet blends this side of Blissville, but Bishops blueberry muffin had me feeling like I had just been hugged by an angel. It was sooo delish!

During my visit I asked a patron what brings her to Bishops, and she stated “There’s just something about the quaint, calm and inviting atmosphere here….Oh, and the coffee is amazing!” Well, I’m convinced that every single sip – whether coffee or tea – is just as satisfying as the first time you tasted it. You may even feel inspired to expresso yourself and finally begin writing that novel of yours. Picture yourself cuddled in the corner – with your notes. All that’s missing is a special brew of the best beans around… and just wait for the words to start pouring from your pen! 🙂

Bishops Coffee and Tea has established roots in Florida and Alabama, and I’m thrilled that this exciting new coffeehouse & café has made its way to Atlanta. Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna (A Tempestuous Tour de Force)

When you think Shakespeare, you probably imagine dry, rhyming verse about love and betrayal and actors dressed like old nobility. But swap the Globe for a circus tent and replace the players with some of the world’s most talented contortionists and acrobats, and you’ll get Cirque du Soleil’s most magical effort to date. Amaluna is a wildly loose adaptation of the Bard’s last play, The Tempest, and it summons all the storm and myth of the original without leaning too heavily on the rules of the plot (let alone gravity).

I recently attended the opening night of this acclaimed acrobatic spectacle, and I was thoroughly awed and entertained. Featuring a cast that includes Olympic caliber gymnasts and world-class acrobat artists, Amaluna captivates the audience in a show of mystery and imagination. And while the entire experience is an unforgettable adventure that seemed to push the limits of both the human body and the human imagination, there were two acts that left me completely breathless.

Manipulation

From street performers with spinning plates to variety show acts on unicycles, we’ve all seen balancing acts before. But nothing prepared me for Manipulation, which starred a lithe and impossibly precise woman called the Balance Goddess. She performs for the star-crossed Romeo and Miranda, but her palm branch act had the whole audience holding their breath (before she promptly took it away completely).

During the performance, the goddess balances fifteen palm branches of varying sizes on top of each other, carefully and delicately placing end upon end before it’s finally time to balance the whole thing on top of her head. The whole process is an act of storytelling as much as it is a demonstration of her extraordinary coordination and concentration skills, and the disastrous conclusion is as graceful as it is climatic.

Cerceau and Waterbowl

One of the show’s most exquisite acts revolved around the cerceau, an aerial hoop that the Moon Goddess uses to bless Miranda with the gift of sensuality (and, ultimately, her first kiss). She rides this hoop through what looks and feels like the deep blue night sky, as stars and bubbles surround her and she sings a captivating spell to the innocent girl. She is luminous and lunar all at once, and the show’s effects only add to the amazing feats she accomplishes with only the support of her own muscles and that thin loop.

Throughout the song, this hoop lowers closer to the illuminated waterbowl below, where Miranda swims and splashes and becomes transfixed by the balancing vision above her. This giant glass bowl is more like a chalice in an ethereal table setting; it glows blue and draws every eye in the audience into this romantic and whimsical experience. I absolutely love the way it captured youthful curiosity, which was an unexpected feat for a performance that starred such a well-cast goddess.

Amaluna is a tempestuous tour de force that’s particularly significant because of how timeless and human it is. It’s proof that the greatest entertainment doesn’t require CGI. Somehow both simple and spectacular, Cirque du Soleil: Amaluna is the ethical and distraction-free show that humanity needs now more than ever. And trust me when I say: Shakespeare has never looked this good.

Georgia’s top breweries celebrate at Georgia Craft Beer Festival

Beer aficionados and good-time-goers made their way to Atlanta’s Candler Park for the Georgia Craft Beer Festival. Celebrating it’s second installment, and with over 100 cold craft beers on tap for sampling, the scene at the Georgia Craft Beer Festival was a glowing outdoor celebration of culture complete with live entertainment, arts and crafts, and a smorgasbord of food trucks.

The Georgia Craft Beer Festival, presented by BDI Live, featured over 30 top statewide breweries, attracting beer mavens from all corners of the city to enjoy a supremely satisfactory afternoon beneath the autumn sun. The fun factor was amped with good vibrations, lip-licking libations and rockin’ live performances by local musicians Wesley Cook, Sailing to Denver, The Higher Choir and Neil Cribbs. Jamming to the tunes, guests browsed the impressive selection of fine local artwork, clothing, jewelry and the like – but the fun didn’t stop there! Twists on perennial party favorites had festival-goers enjoying games like life-size Jenga and bubble soccer.

Event proceeds benefited The Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, which is a trade organization representing the many delicious craft breweries and beer pubs throughout the state of Georgia. Those serious about their beer selections know that without organizations like the GCBG, fun-filled festivals such as this would be difficult to come by! Needless to say, the Georgia Craft Beer Festival’s second anniversary was a memorable afternoon brimming with great sips, tasty eats and cultural treats for all to raise a pint in toast. Le Dîner en Blanc: A White Haute Affair

Picture this… You’re invited to an exclusive affair at the backdrop of the most beautiful view in town… but its location is unknown. The requirements; wear your finest white attire; pack a picnic feast along with a table and a few chairs. Oh, and most importantly, bring a friend.

On a brisk day in the city, under the eve of a moonlit sky, Atlanta’s most chic crowd did exactly that… at Le Dîner en Blanc.

Held at the gorgeous Millennium Gate Park at Atlantic Station, this private, posh picnic that’s equal parts mystery tour, pop-up feast, je ne sais quoi, and must-attend epicurean phenomenon, brought out Atlanta’s most fabulous for a fashionable feast underneath the stars. Moët & Chandon hosted this white haute affair with sips courtesy of their Moet Ice Imperial. Fitted in an all-white bottle and filled with luxurious flavor, Moet’s Ice Imperial served as the perfect pairing to the night’s festivities that featured decadent dining, lots of dancing, candid moments captured on camera, and many wishes that the night would never end.

Those in the know for this posh pop-up picnic eagerly await the venue announcement. Donned in all white and ready for a regally rowdy night, attendees know that whichever spot is chosen, they are sure to “see and be seen.” And a sight to see it is. Both revelers and passers-by gasp in awe at the sight of partiers dressed in all-white as they walk in procession to their final destination. Diner en Blanc graced Atlantans for the first time this year as the private dinner party to which you wish you were invited – which is only fitting, since that’s exactly how the event began 25 years ago.

Native Parisian Francois Pasquier had been studying abroad for about three years, and upon his return to France, many of his friends wanted to meet for dinner to catch up. Knocking out two birds with one incredibly chic and well-thrown stone, Pasquier decided to invite all his friends to dinner, encouraging each to bring a plus one. Everyone was instructed to wear white as to recognize the others in attendance… And, well, the rest is history.

Diner en Blanc proved to be nothing less than the delectable dinner party that served up fashionable food and scrumptious style. Diner en Blanc is a place where new friends are made and elegance is on full display. And although this posh party was a first for Atlanta in 2014, it definitely won’t be the last.
