Attendees at the 1st Annual Derby Brunch Hatwalk, 2011

Launched in November 2006, T.R.I.P. began when childhood friends Corliss Hill and Tabeier S.Hamilton invited a group of their family and friends to travel with them to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. What began as a birthday weekend getaway turned into a week-long community service project with more than 30 people coming together to aid in post-recovery and clean-up activities. To date, T.R.I.P. has completed projects in distressed neighborhoods such as Miami’s Little Haitiand Miami Gardens. With the advent of tornado season in much of the nation, T.R.I.P. seeks to raise funds to ready their volunteer team of professionals to rally to the aid of communities needing rebuilding assistance.

Event tickets to the 2nd Annual Derby Brunch Hatwalk are $55 per person and are available for purchase at http://derbyhatwalk.eventbrite.com.  About Shirley Strawberry

One of the most recognizable names and voices in radio today, Shirley Strawberry was dubbed “The Best Voice in Radio” by Steve Harvey. She is the co-host of one of today’s biggest, nationally syndicated radio morning shows in the country with nearly eight million listeners. Her career in radio started in the mid-80s at Chicago’s WCGI-FM as the co-host of the Doug Banks Show. By the early 90s, Shirley’s local popularity had soared enough to pique the interest of Hollywood radio where she began working at 92.3 The Beat, KKBT-FM, in Los Angeles where she quickly built a loyal fan base. In 2000, the radio mogul, Cathy Hughes (Radio-One), took over the station. Among other huge deals they propositioned, Shirley was offered the job as Steve Harvey’s co-host. Today, more than a decade later, Shirley has sat side by side with Steve Harvey while the country fell in love with “the voice” of Shirley Strawberry and the wisdom she imparts during the show’s Strawberry Letter segment. Each week day, during this segment, Shirley and Steve offer honest advice to listeners who have sent in letters concerning life’s challenges. The radio segment grew to be so successful that Shirley was asked to write a book based on the letters from the show. Shirley recently won the 2012 NAACP Image Award as New Debut Author.

Earning my stripes as a Bendel Girl

Henri Bendel New York

Hey Divas,

Now anyone that knows me knows that I have a serious obsession for all things fab. The more fab the better! In fact, if I had to rate my infatuation with fabulocity I would have to say that it is seriously teetering on therapeutic intervention. 🙂 So when I heard that the Henri Bendel was hosting a shopping event to introduce their Atlanta retail store, an immediate rush of excitement came upon me as this would be the perfect opportunity for me to earn my stripes in my quest to become a Bendel Girl. 🙂

For those of you who don’t know about and/or have never heard of Henri Bendel; well, let’s just say you should. Easily recognized by their signature brown and white stripes, Henri Bendel is synonymous with couture fashion as well Bendel is credited with bringing Parisian designer Coco Chanel’s fashions to the United States. Henri Bendel also introduced other worldwide fashion powerhouses such as Anna Sui, Stephen Burrows, Rick Owens, and the fabulous Diane von Furstenberg. Bendel launched their flagship retail store in New York in 1895, and has since opened more than 19 stores throughout the United States. I was first introduced to this fabulous brand a few years back via Bath & Body Works who carried a Henri Bendel bath line that I simply adored! At that time I picked up several of their lotions, bath gels and scrubs which smell sooo delish! Believe it or not I still have a small surplus of it left in my arsenal of beauty products. 🙂

Ok, now on to the event!

Held at their uber-chic Lenox Square Mall retail store, and hosted by the lovely Emily Loftiss, NYC beauty and style blogger, this event was nothing short of fabulous as guests mixed and mingled over champagne, while shopping Bendel’s collection of haute beauties. One lucky “Bendel Girl” even won a hatbox filled with Bendel signature staples. I was in full “jaw-drop” mode as all around me were lovely bracelets, necklaces, and rings, Oh my! And being that I have a weakness for girly goodies, you know I couldn’t help but indulge, so I snagged a Henri Bendel pomegranate scented travel candle which smelled so divine! (queue dramatic faint) 😀

Henri Bendel also carries a variety of tempting treats such as compact cases, cosmetic bags, scarves, totes, as well they offer many other personal accessories and gifts. I felt like the proverbial “kid in a candy store” as I browsed their “decadent” selection of Bendel signature fragrances, candles, beautiful handbags, and yummy jewelry and accessories that would satisfy any girl’s appetite. 😉 And although their flagship store in NYC may carry more of a smorgasbord of products in comparison, the Atlanta store provides just enough of a taste of the Bendel collection to have you craving for more.

My hair is in desperate need of an intervention…

Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System

Ok, I’ve had it!!! I’m at wits end with my hair!!! It’s well overdue for an intervention; and I’m not talking about an intimate gathering whereby my closest friends and relatives express their concerns about the direction that my hair is “headed”. No ladies; this intervention will require a more “innovative” approach. So from hence forth I am taking a stance by refusing to speak to my hair; well, until it decides to seek professional “therapy”.

See, I’m fed up with the frizz, the dryness, and styles that last about as long as a snowflake during summertime in Houston Texas…and trust me, that’s NOT very long at all. And let’s not talk about the breakage. I mean my hair has seen more breaks than Atlanta rush hour, but that’s a whole other story. 😐 See, lately I’ve been slowly trying to wean my hair off of all the harsh chemicals that accompany relaxed hair, by stretching out my relaxers a bit longer. And let me tell you; my transition to more natural hair styling has been a battle that has definitely NOT been in my favor.

So what’s a Diva to (hair)do? 😐

Well, Design Essentials has developed a hair care and treatment system that just may get me and my hair, back onto speaking terms again. 🙂

Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System

Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a seminar hosted by Design Essentials, surrounding the Bronner Brothers Hair Show in Atlanta, which featured the unveiling of their new salon-exclusive Strengthening Therapy System. This state of the art, amino-acid infused, Thermal Reconditioning Systemis specifically designed for both transitioning and relaxed hair. The debut line of the Strengthening Therapy System is divided into four products which focus on strengthening the hair while yielding straight, silky, smooth results without permanent chemical alteration. These four products include: Cleansing Sulfate Free Shampoo, Transitioning Mousse, Elongation Mousse and Silkening Spray. According to Design Essentials, this innovative system provides the highest level of manageability for up to 12 weeks of frizz free, humidity resistant, longer lasting styles, (all of which are very appealing to my hair) and it’s also great for those with very curly, tightly coiled and relaxed color treated hair. Get all the facts on Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy here.

Ok, Design Essentials you now have my undivided attention…

Here’s a breakdown Design Essentials® Strengthening Therapy System:

Design Essentials Salon System

Design Essentials Salon System

Style Versatility. This trusted Amino-Acid Thermal Reconditioning System provides the ultimate in style flexibility and versatility without the use of harsh chemicals. Straight today – curly tomorrow…It’s whatever you decide.

Style Manageability. With best in class formulation of minerals and nourishing botanicals like Sweet Almond Oil, Honey, Rose Hip Oil and Panthenol, hair is fortified and reconditioned for maximum smoothness and strength – Frizz is tamed, curls are loosened and damaged hair is strengthened.

Style Longevity. Achieve up to 12 weeks of frizz free, humidity resistant, lasting style. Root-to-tip swelling is significantly reduced with maximum reversion resistance.

Proven Results on a Wide Range of Textures. Whether the hair is wavy, curly or tightly coiled, Design Essentials® Strengthening Therapy System delivers strong, silky or curl enhanced hair.

Safest and Most Effective Thermal Reconditioning System. Developed with a trusted Amino-Acid Reparative Technology, this system is formaldehyde free and uses the lowest recommended heat setting in the industry (340°F – 400°F).

Hmmm… Maybe there’s hope for my hair after all. 🙂

Ok, on to the seminar…

Professional Hairstylist Brownie explains the essentials of the Strengthening Therapy System

Professional Hairstylist Brownie explains the essentials of the Strengthening Therapy System

Brownie Sims, of The Brownie Brushes Salon in Oakland California, conducted a two hour presentation on how to use this exclusive and innovative new system in front of a large crowd consisting mostly of hairstylists and salon owners. Brownie performed a step-by-step demonstration on three ladies with various hair types ranging from natural, relaxed, and colored treated hair. To everyone’s amazement the Strengthening Therapy System refined the natural texture of the ladies’ hair while still maintaining very healthy looking hair. Wow! It was definitely a jaw dropping moment. Brownie further emphasized that this series of products serves as an alternative to Keratin Treatments which have been the industry standard for transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. This system also virtually eliminates the need for the “Big Chop” which for most natural hair transitioners is a “big” deal as you literally “chop” all of your relaxed/chemically treated hair to begin the process of re-growing your natural hair from the root. As woman we oftentimes associate our femininity with our appearances, and unfortunately the length and texture of our hair is generally what we use as a gauge to define ourselves, so I applaud all of the Naturalista’s out there who’ve decided to take back their “roots” and redefine how a “real woman” should look. Go Divas!

Also, the fabulous Rebecca Mariolis, Director of Education at Design Essentials, whom I had the pleasure of meeting a few weeks prior at Fro Fashion Week’s Bloggers Brands and Brunch, was also in attendance to support the event. @ the movies

Disney’s John Carter was a pleasant surprise

Disney's John Carter movie

Wheeeew, what a month! Fresh off the sneak peek of Disney’s John Carter, and let me tell you it was definitely one for the ages. The fabulous Dea Win from Pretty Girls Rock Dresses accompanied me to this exclusive movie premiere that was greeted by a packed house at the Regal Cinemas movie theater in Atlantic Station.

Now I must admit, when I saw the trailers leading up to the premiere for John Carter I was a bit unsure of what to expect. I mean, there were lots of very elaborate special effects and action sequences…two things I love in movies and also two things not easily associated with a Disney production. But, I try to be optimistic when it comes to situations such as this, and I like to reserve my judgment until I’ve actually seen the movie for myself. So, although I may have gone in to the premiere with somewhat of a skeptic’s eye; I definitely left with both eyes wide open, as John Carter kept my undivided attention throughout! The film is largely based on A Princess of Mars (1917) which spawned a series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs who is best known for his creation of jungle hero Tarzan. So, with a resume like that, and Disney behind it, I knew that we were gonna be in for a special treat!

Ok, so let’s get right on down to the story of John Carter:

“John Carter” is an action-adventure set on the wild and mysterious planet of Barsoom (Mars) with its unfamiliar inhabitants: the warring Red Men of Zodanga and Helium, the savage Tharks and the manipulative and all-powerful Therns.

Once a world rich with life and civilization, Barsoom is now a dying planet, devastated by conflicts that have raged for over ten thousand years. The Zodangans, lead by Sab Than, battle with the Heliumites, whose beautiful Princess Dejah Thoris strives to find a solution that will end the fighting and save her beloved planet.

When war-weary American Civil War veteran John Carter is unexpectedly transported from a remote cave in Arizonato the red planet, the balance of power is tipped. The change in gravity gives Carter extraordinary abilities. His apparent “super powers” flummox the warring tribes and make him a powerful asset to any who can capture him.

He is initially found and enslaved by the Tharks, but Carter wins the respect of their leader, Tars Tarkas, who risks everything to help him escape the fearsome tribe so that he may find a way back home. With the assistance of Dejah Thorisand Sola, a Thark woman who is entrusted with his care, Carter embarks on the perilous journey to the sacred Gates of Iss in the hope of returning to Earth.

Following ancient Barsoomian legend and his raw instinct, Carter finds the Gates, but far more is revealed there than he and Dejah ever expected.

Meanwhile, Sab Than has convinced Dejah’s father, the King of Helium, to agree to a political marriage of convenience between himself and Dejah in order to unite the warring entities and end the civil war. Unbeknownst to the king, Sab Than is operating under the control of the all-powerful Matai Shang, leader of the Therns. The intention is not for peace but to overpower the Heliumites, paving the way for the Therns to take ultimate control.

When John Carter learns of this treacherous plot, he embarks on a mission of heroic proportions. With the help of his ally Tars Tarkas, Carter forms a formidable army, setting out to reach Helium and stop the wedding before it is too late. The survival of Princess Dejah, of Helium, and the entire planet of Barsoom rests in the hands of one extraordinary man—John Carter.

————————————————————

Filled with amazing special effects that would make most sci-fi movies blush with envy, Disney’s John Carter had me at the edge of my seat the entire ride.

Ok, Disney….you’ve definitely captured my attention with John Carter, and I can’t wait to see what else you have up your sleeves as you delve into the special effects and live action arena in film making. Although John Carter was a huge step away from the traditional kid-flair that we’ve come to expect and love from Disney Studios, I encourage everyone to go out and see this movie for themselves. You just might be pleasantly surprised by what you see. 😉
