You can’t live in the South and ignore the Kentucky Derby! And when Derby days come around, it’s in your best interest to have a plan. You don’t want to be stuck without a place to don your best fascinator, do you?! Well, I’ve got the perfect place for you fancy Atlantans hoping to flaunt your best sundress and root for your favorite stallion.
Sweet Auburn Barbecue in Poncey-Highland serves BBQ with an Asian twist, and this year, they’re hosting a Kentucky Derby viewing party on Saturday, May 4! The party goes all day from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m., so you’ll have plenty of time to eat and drink to your heart’s content at this party. I’ve personally tried the BBQ Shrimp Scampi, Barbecue Nachos, BBQ Combo Plate, King of Memphis Melt, and Homemade Banana Pudding, and ALL of these items were incredible. 😛 Additionally, just for the party, you’ll have the chance to chomp into themed dishes—Pimento Cheese Biscuits, Bourbon Glazed Wings, and Cucumber Sandwiches. Getting excited yet?
Of course I can’t talk about a party without speaking of drinks. Especially not a Kentucky Derby viewing party! Sweet Auburn will be serving classic cocktails for the races—take your pick from the Pimm’s Cup and the Horse’s Neck and the Foolish Pleasure. Though you can’t go wrong, I really think you’ll love the Foolish Pleasure!
This mint julep-inspired sip is a lot like the iconic Derby drink, but it’s even cooler—it’s a slushier version! Yes, you read that right: a mint julep slushy! 😛 This is pretty much a dream come true in a glass. “Foolish Pleasure” was made in collaboration with ASW Distillery and Honeysuckle Gelato, and it was named after the winner of the 1975 Kentucky Derby. This beautiful, berry-hued drink fuses ASW Distillery’s Fiddler Whiskey with Honeysuckle Gelato’s Blackberry Lime sorbet along with brown sugar mint tea, creme de mure, Regan’s orange bitters, blackberry liqueur, and orange bitters to create a delightful, refreshing drink for a sunny spring day.
Last but certainly not least, there will also be giveaways, prizes for “Best Derby Attire,” “Best Sundress,” “Best Bowtie,” “Best Hat,” and much more. Let’s see… Great food, fabulous drinks, AND fascinators… Now that’s a Triple Crown!
Are you ready for as close as you can get to a day at the Kentucky Derby in Atlanta? Sweet Auburn BBQ is the clear winner! So grab your crew and race over to the Sweet Auburn Barbecue for Derby Day!
